Lack of saliva can lead to many problems since saliva plays an important role in keeping the tissues of the mouth lubricated and protected. Also, not to be overlooked is the role of saliva in the first stage of digestion. Hi and welcome to my dental blog. These first posts will be aimed at busting some dental myths that are still out there. As my patients know, I am all about patient education. I am also open to suggestions if there is a topic you are interested in.
Dental Myth #1...."if I am not having any dental pain or discomfort, then everything is fine and I don't have any dental problems." Lack of tooth or jaw pain is not an indication of good dental health. You can have a raging infection, cracked tooth, or cavity and have no pain whatsoever. On the other hand, if you are experiencing pain you most likely have a serious dental condition that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Once you get to a point of having pain, the cost and chance of complications are usually higher. That is why I practice and encourage preventive dentistry...the method of finding and treating dental problems BEFORE they cause pain. Treating dental problems as soon as they can be detected is more comfortable, more convenient, and less costly. So if you have not had a regular dental checkup in some time because you think "everything is just fine" you may be surprised one day when biting into something and part of a tooth breaks. More often than not I get emergency calls on the weekend when someone is out of town on vacation and they have a bad toothache and/or swollen face. So, the moral of the story...don't ruin your vacation with a dental emergency that can be prevented. Get regular dental exams and take care of your teeth so they can take care of you! Hey your teeth are hard working and deserve your attention. So give us a call and we will be happy to give you and your teeth the attention they deserve. Until next time... Dr. Dino |
